Art of the Cover - David Rose & His Orchestra's "Holiday For Strings" (1958 )

David Rose & His Orchestra's "Holiday For Strings" was issued in 1958 on RCA's Camden label. The album contains 78 rpm sides from the 1940s.

London-born composer/arranger Rose met Red Skelton during WWII service. Red hired him as bandleader on his Raleigh cigarettes radio show. After his radio run ended, Dave stayed with Skelton through 21 TV seasons.

David's most famous compositions were "The Stripper", "Holiday for Strings", and "Calypso Melody". He also wrote music for many television series, including It's a Great Life, The Tony Martin Show, Little House on the Prairie, Highway To Heaven, Bonanza, and Highway Patrol under the pseudonym "Ray Llewellyn."

Rose's work in composing music for television programs earned him four Emmy Awards. In addition, he was musical director for The Red Skelton Show during its 21-year run on the CBS and NBC networks.

Rose was married to Martha Raye from 1938 to '41 and to Judy Garland from '41 to '44. He and Garland had no children.

For those who enjoy light orchestral music, this is as good as it gets. A special treat is the guest appearance by Woody Herman on "Harlem Nocturne."

The Expanded & Remastered CD Reissue of "Holiday For Strings" offers a full 25 excellent selections (over 75 minutes of music!), and is of great entertainment value.  .

Tracks #1, #2, #3, #5 and #6 on Side Two are from a four record 78 set that Rose's orchestra recorded in early 1942. "Humoresque" was originally on a 1945 single. It has a pizzicato sound similar to "Holiday For Strings," Dave's #2 hit in 1944. "Poinciana" is this set's other charter - hitting #11 in '44.
