Art of the Cover - VA "Big Star Small World" (2006)

A lovely piece of artwork adorns this sublime - and rare - collection of cover versions of songs created by by the mighty Big Star.

The gorgeous portrait of Alex and pals was painted by Memphis artist Lamar Sorrento.

Yap, some peerless songs are covered by an array of fine artists .. the likes of Teenage Fanclub, The Posies (which contains 'late era' Big Star members Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer), Wilco, Matthew Sweet (with help from one Mike Mills!), Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown ... and many more.

The collection closes with the newly recorded song Hot Thing featuring the reunited version of Big Star, led by original members Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens, with help from Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer.

The legendary Big Star - the quintessential American power pop band - remain one of the most influential cult acts in rock & roll history. Influenced by the best elements of so-called British Invasion rock, as well as American music heroes, Big Star created an original sound that indiscreetly influenced the future of music and generations of indie bands on both sides of the Atlantic.

This tribute features classics from the group's three studio albums, performed by artists of diverse styles - all of whom credit Big Star for much of the influence infused into their own great music.
