The Word - Goodnight Hustlers

I've been stumbling across a lot of old Wire stuff lately, those rare times I watch the ever more mind numbing and insidious idiot box and, luckily, caught this episode again the other night.

Yap, Kima delivers a radical version of Goodnight Moon in typical "Wire" style, as the final scene of Season 5, Episode 7 ("Took").

What a beautiful, moving, unforgettable scene.

Screenwriter Richard Price apparently lifted the passage from his novel Clockers at the request of producer David Simon.

Detective Greggs (Sonja Sohn) and her weekends-only adopted son Elijah, sit at a window, way past bedtime, looking out upon another dark, yet ominous, Baltimore street:

Kima: Let's say goodnight to everybody.
Kima: Goodnight moon...Elijah: Goodnight moon...
Kima: Goodnight stars...
Elijah: Goodnight stars...
Kima: Goodnight po-pos...
Elijah: Goodnight po-pos...
Kima: Goodnight fiends...
Elijah: Goodnight fiends...
Kima:Goodnight hoppers...
Elijah: Goodnight hoppers...
Kima: Goodnight hustlers...
Elijah: Goodnight hustlers...
Kima: Goodnight scammers...
Elijah: Goodnight scammers...
Kima: Goodnight to everybody...
Elijah: Goodnight to everybody...
Kima: Goodnight to one and all...
Elijah: Goodnight to one and all.
