The empty handed painter from your streets, is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets. This sky, too, is folding under you. And it's all over now, Baby Blue.
We already posted a sublime cover of this track from a young Van the Man (then known as Van the Boy) and his Belfast pals "Them" from 1966.
Here's Bob, a few months earlier, with a wonderful impromptu delivery of the original in an English hotel during his legendary 1965 UK tour, as captured in the seminal D.A. Pennebaker documentary "Don't Look Back" (surely the greatest music doc of all!) released in 1968.
Yap, that's lil cuddly acolyte Donovan in rapt awe at the master's feet!
In Don't Look Back, Dylan regales the room with "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" just after proclaiming "Hey, that's pretty GOOD, man!" in the middle of Donovan's performance of "To Sing for You".
"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is a gorgeous poetic song of love and farewell apparently to Joan Baez .... who appears many times in the doc!
The song first appeared on Bob's "Bringing It All Back Home album", released on March 22, 1965.
Dylan's romance with Baez had pretty much run its course by the time of the 1965 tour and the film very candidly captures what essentially amounts to their breakup. In one scene, Joany is really pissing Bob off and it looks like he'd rather nothing more than to wring her neck!! ... Well, that's love for ya!!
