Now here's the real deal itself! And very interesting it is too. A must have for anybody who's heard of Bob Dylan, let alone his legions of die-hard fans!

Director Todd Haynes's bold, experimental film about Dylan, was shown for the first time in the Venice Festival. According to the Daily Telegraph, the movie "is emphatically not for the literal-minded. It's closer to a work of abstract art or a symbolist poem than to a conventional film biography."

David Gritten goes on to say "I cannot say I understand Dylan one bit better - and there's no higher praise for the film than that." Ermmm ... ok ... fair enough!

The movie is pretty good actually. Equal parts annoying and fascinating.

Some of the acting is really bad though - especially by horrid scenery eater Cate Blanchett. Most surprisingly, the normally excellent Christian Bale is pretty poor here too. Is Haynes not good with actors? Fucked if I know!

Saying that, Richard Gere stands head and shoulders above the rest in a great performance.

I'm Not There is a biographical film reflecting the life of musician Bob Dylan. It depicts the iconic singer-songwriter through seven distinct stages of his life by using six different actors/actress (Marcus Carl Franklin, Ben Whishaw, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, and Cate Blanchett).

It was co-written and directed by Todd Haynes and also features David Cross, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams, and Richie Havens.

The film has received much press for telling its story using non-traditional techniques, similar to the poetic narrative style of Dylan's songwriting. "The film is going to be inspired by Dylan's music and his ability to re-create and re-imagine himself time and time again," according to key producer, Christine Vachon.

Todd Haynes (VELVET GOLDMINE, FAR FROM HEAVEN) delivers this dazzling, experimental take on the life of popular music’s most revered and enigmatic artist: Bob Dylan.

In keeping with the impossible-to-pin-down nature of Dylan himself, Haynes chose to cast six different actors to portray several incarnations of the groundbreaking troubadour.

The result is a challenging, sprawling work that spans several decades and genres. Woody (Marcus Carl Franklin) is a young black child with a folk music obsession; Jack Rollins (Christian Bale) is an upstart folksinger whose protest songs have ignited an entire generation; Arthur (Ben Wishaw) is a Rimbaud-esque figure who has begun to embrace a new form of lyrical poetry; Robbie (Heath Ledger) is a well-known actor whose marriage to the lovely Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) crumbles under the weight of his lifestyle; Billy (Richard Gere) is a slippery frontiersman who echoes Dylan’s infatuation with the Old West and American folklore; and, finally, there is the substance-abusing, confrontational Jude (Cate Blanchett), who represents Dylan in the turbulent mid-1960s.

Much in the same way that Dylan appropriated a vast array of musical styles to create his own vernacular, Haynes does the same thing with I’M NOT THERE, using his expansive knowledge of movie history to pay homage to a variety of movements and genres (Godard, Fellini, Lester, etc.).

The typically extraordinary cinematographer Edward Lachman outdoes even himself this time around, incorporating so many different visual styles that it’s impossible to decide which is the most beautiful.
